The National Dog Show could have as many as 150 different dog breeds shown by their proud owners or handlers. The true purpose of dog shows are to maintain breed standards, and the dogs who best represent their breeds, are the most sought after for breeding. Without dog shows, we may not have such well-defined dog breeds to enjoy and love.
One amazing thing about dogs is that they come in so many breeds, in a huge variety of sizes and shapes. National Dog Show showcases the best of these breeds. Every dog breed has its own history, which tells a story of how a particular dog acquired his physical characteristics and why he has a particular temperament.
The poodle, the breed we most often picture when thinking of show dogs, because of the ornate grooming, is actually one of the smartest breeds. The creative grooming of the poodle’s fur, that many regard as being “froo froo” actually originated by manly hunters. They shaved their fluffy hunting dogs so they could maneuver through water more easily, but left tufts of fur in specific places to protect their vital organs and keep their joints warm. Want to hear it from the poodle’s point of view? You can with petcentric's Friend Fetcher, our very own breed selector tool.
