Dog Diving (aka Dock Diving) is a blast for dogs because they not only get to run after their favorite ball or toy, they get to splash down in water. The dog runs down a stage and jumps off the end in pursuit of a fetch toy. The dog that dives the farthest from the dock, wins.
A sport that always draws a crowd is Freestyle Flying Disc. This requires a certain degree of athleticism, grace, and style on the human’s part as well as the dog’s, but it’s truly exciting because human and canine perform together as partners. The handler creates a routine to music, using disc throws, canine catches, and a lot of choreographed moves. This sport is especially suited for medium size adult dogs (not puppies), but any dog healthy enough for vigorous exercise can participate.
The joy of dog sports
The benefits of participating in a canine sport are immeasurable. Dogs love to run and most have energy to burn. Having a sport to learn and train for gives dogs a sense of purpose. Many dogs love the excitement of competition. Dogs that get to spend time practicing and competing are far less likely to become bored and destructive. Your dog doesn’t have to be a purebred show dog to shine in competition. Sometimes great athletic dogs are just everyday pets, like the ones in this Purina® Incredible Dog Challenge® video, who ended up competing on national TV!
