Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog with a big attitude. This is a dog that will happily snuggle with you one minute and chase after the neighbor’s Rottweiler the next. They will protect their territory valiantly. The Yorkie is an affectionate dog but isn’t naturally good with children. Supervision is highly recommended, as Yorkies are more fragile than toys.
Yorkshire Terrier
Born and bred in Britain, the Yorkshire Terrier is a dog of fairly recent origin. It is believed that Scottish weavers brought a small terrier with them during a period of immigration from Scotland to Yorkshire and Lancanshire during the 1850’s. These Scotch Terriers, sometimes known as Halifax Terriers, were bred with local small terriers. It is believed that the Yorkie’s lineage includes the Manchester Terrier, the Maltese, the Skye, the Dandie Dinmont and the Paisley terriers. Popular belief states that the Yorkie was bred to protect small children from rat bites at night one on guard at the head of the bed and one at the foot, like furry guardian angels.
